Southdown: Double Deckers

LEFT: an assortment of ex-BH&D Lodekkas parked inside Conway Street bus garage. These are, from left to right, FSF no. 2027, FS no. 2013, FSF no. 2038, LDS no. 2002, and FSs nos. 2070 and 2055. By the time this July 1974 view was taken, the BH&D portion of the fleetnames had been removed and the red and cream BH&D livery has disappeared, all vehicles shown here being in either Southdown traditional livery or wearing the corporate N.B.C. leaf green and white livery (in the case of nos. 2002 and 2055).

The standard double decker for Southdown throughout the 1960s was the full-front Northern Counties bodied Leyland Titan PD3, the company building up a fleet of 285, affectionately nick-named `Queen Marys`. LEFT: Being pursued by an Eastbourne Corporation Leyland PD2, Southdown `Queen Mary` no. 259 navigates Cornfield Road roundabout, Eastbourne, February, 1971.

By 1973 the N.B.C. style white fleetnames and logo had replaced the gold leaf Southdown fleetname, sitting uneasily against the traditional livery. However both the views below retain the Mackenzie script style fleetnames on the radiator grille. Also at Eastbourne are no. 279, departing the bus station (left view) and no. 958 parked in Pevensey Road (right view).
